barbed or barbless, old argument, new topic.

i am currently fishing a local lake that doesnt allow barbed hooks, the fishes mouths are in a terrible state and only seem to be getting worse, it is very distressing to see the state of some of them. you can hardly get your little finger tip in the gap in their mouth. considering there has been no barbless hooks allowed for 10 years at least to my knowledge, does anyone feel that introducing a new rule where microbarbs are allowed would improve the situation for the future. it may stop the hook slipping during the fight and they really do fight like tigers in this venue. i realise that it is too late for the carp that are already damaged but i think it may give the other carp a chance. also would it be better for the fish that are in a bad way to remove them to a stock pond that isnt fished to save them getting caught again and further damaging their already poor mouths, any advice or opinion would be greatly recieved.

My view is that both types of hooks hooks can damage a fishes mouth if used incorrectly.

If I was running the lake and the fish were that bad I suspect its down to poor fish care rather than specific hook patterns.

Anglers arent playing their fish long enough and are too keen to get them in quickly withouth letting them tire first. Seen it loads of times on my local lake

Probably also playing the fish to aggresively as well

You could ask that they introduce a rule that all anglers must have bonjela/kryston medi kit for damaged mouths as well

I prefer Barbless as I tihnk thety cause less damage but as per above if used incorrectly they are both bad for fish

thanks for your views, what about the fish that are very badly damaged, do you think that removing them will make a difference?

dont have a problem with either, have seen mouth damage of fish on both, and agree that some is caused from the hook size\or patten, and some from the, I've got 30lb braid, 50lb hooklink and i will get this fish in!!!
educate and instruct, rather than ban and blame!
as for removing damaged mouth fish, if it was down to me, i would remove, and give the fish a chance to recover, but once damaged not a lot can be done.
